Our Purpose
Auton Residential Children's Homes are part of St Cuthberts Care, a charity working
for the common good by enabling people to develop to their personal potentia
l.

Welcome to Auton Children's Residential Homes

St Cuthberts Care currently operates a number of children’s residential homes across the region.

Auton House in Newcastle is a purpose-built home, which opened in 2009, the same year as Auton Darlington. Auton Villa and The Flat, on the Newcastle site, opened at the end of 2010 and 2011 saw our fifth home, in Sunderland, begin taking referals.

Auton House and Auton Villa  can each accommodate up to six children – both boys and girls – aged from 8 to 17 years, who have emotional or behavioural problems.

The Flat is designed specifically for the long-term placement of two young people aged between 8 and 17 years with learning and/or sensory disability.

Auton Sunderland, in the Thornhill area of the city is our most recently opened home. The spacious, three storey building has been a St Cuthberts Care property for many years and has been modernised and refurbished to a high standard for its new role.

The south of the region is served by Auton Darlington, a recently-modernised and adapted detached house in a quiet residential part of the town. Auton Darlington provides the same category of care as Auton House and Auton Villa.

Through our Auton Children’s Residential Homes service, we offer support to children who have experienced multiple placement breakdowns and who need a period of stability; children who are in transition from foster care before a move back to their birth family and children who need a long-term residential placement.

We also provide accommodation and assistance to young people who are in transition from social care to independent living. We make everyone feel welcome when they arrive and throughout their time with us so that they become a valued member of the group.

Our aims in working with the children are to support them in making their own decisions about their lives, and to teach them how to replace negative, often self-destructive behaviour patterns with alternative methods of coping.

We encourage young people at Auton to recognise their own strengths, individuality and potential for development and independence.

Auton Children's Residential Home DarlingtonEach child or young person has an individual care plan based upon an assessment of both their needs and their strengths and formulated in consultation with social workers and other professionals. The plan is regularly revised as the child develops and progresses.

We promote and safeguard the education and health of young people in our care and provide them with opportunities to engage and interact with other members of the community to develop social skills, independence and self-esteem.

All of the young people in our care have improved significantly during their stay at Auton thanks to our commitment to behaviour management and to providing support in a therapeutic environment.
